Trusting Your Gut: Why Radical Self-Advocacy is Your Ultimate Superpower

How many times have you swallowed your own intuition, staying quiet just because the person across from you wore a uniform or held a title? We are conditioned to be "good girls" to nod, follow rules, and avoid making a scene.

But what happens when staying silent means losing your future? Or your life?

In our latest podcast episode, we dive into the raw, fierce journeys of Beaky and Vanessa. These two women had their worlds violently shattered, but instead of playing the victim, they chose to scream to be heard. They chose radical self-advocacy.

Beaky’s Story: Sacking the Surgeon

In 2019, a deep, nagging pain in Beaky’s ribs screamed that something was wrong. Her persistence led to a breast cancer diagnosis. When her surgeon pushed a standard treatment plan that carried a terrifying 1-in-200 risk of heart damage, Beaky refused to just nod along.

Armed with her own research, she demanded a full mastectomy. The surgeon dismissed her, calling her choice "stupid."

Most of us would have crumbled. Instead, Beaky fired her surgeon. She fought for a new medical team, got the surgery she knew she needed, and saved her own life by refusing to let a white coat silence her gut.

Vanessa’s Story: Crying Inside the Helmet

Vanessa’s life changed in a split second when a car ran a red light, crushing her and her bicycle. Emergency doctors brushed it off as "bruising" and sent her home.

That "bruising" turned into a grueling seven-year nightmare of chronic pain, seven surgeries, and a dark spiral of depression. Trapped in a broken body, Vanessa reached a breaking point: she refused to let the driver who hit her steal the rest of her life.

To conquer her paralyzing fear of the road, she bought a motorbike. She sobbed inside her helmet, battling blinding panic attacks just to ride. But she kept going. Vanessa fought her way from bedbound to the desert sands, ultimately becoming the first British woman to finish the brutal, 6,000 km Africa Eco Race.

The Fire You Need to Take Away

  • You are the ultimate expert on YOU: Professionals know their fields, but you know your body and soul. If something feels wrong, fight for a second opinion. Shout until you are heard.

  • Bravery is crying and doing it anyway: Vanessa proved you don’t have to be fearless. You can be terrified, shaking, and sobbing—and still step on the gas. Confidence is built through the terror.

  • Action kills victimhood: Both women were handed tragedies they didn't deserve. Instead of drowning in "why me?", they took radical ownership of what they could control.

Stop playing nice. Stop waiting for permission to protect yourself. Listen to the full episode now, unleash your inner advocate, and start trusting your gut today!
